چکیده

The pathogenesis of the sepsis syndrome is critically dependent on activation of the innate immune response. Innate immunity plays a direct role in the development of sepsis and is also crucial for the activation and modulation of later antigen-specifi c adaptive immune responses. Nearly all of the clinical manifestations of sepsis and the systemic infl ammatory response syndrome (SIRS) can be attributed to components of the innate immune response. However, this review focuses on the new and expanding fi eld of innate immune activation by pathogen-responsive receptors, most importantly, the toll-like receptors (TLRs).

Epidermal mucus, a major determinant in fish health: a review

Fish epidermal mucus contains innate immune components, secreted by globlet cells that provide the primary defence against different pathogenic microbes and act as a barrier between fish and its immediate niche. The major function of mucus includes entrapment and sloughing of microbes. The mucus also contains many factors such as antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), lysozymes, lectins, proteases, etc...

Complexities of targeting innate immunity to treat infection.

Innate immunity is an ancient form of host defence that is activated rapidly to enable, through a multiplicity of effector mechanisms, defence against a broad spectrum of microbial threats. From this perspective, innate immunity has desirable characteristics of a therapy against infections, and, as a consequence, the innate immune system has become a major target for the development of therapeu...

Host response to Candida albicans bloodstream infection and sepsis

Candida albicans is a major cause of bloodstream infection which may present as sepsis and septic shock - major causes of morbidity and mortality world-wide. After invasion of the pathogen, innate mechanisms govern the early response. Here, we outline the models used to study these mechanisms and summarize our current understanding of innate immune responses during Candida bloodstream infection...

Complexity of complement activation in sepsis

The complement system is one of the key players in the defence against infections. Its activation during the innate immune response leads to the generation of several proteins that contribute to the lysis and opsonization of microorganisms, regulate inflammatory reactions and bridge innate immunity with the subsequent adaptive immune response. Complement is also activated in overwhelming bacter...
